'Deadliest Catch' captain Phil Harris dies.

While I was surfing the internet this morning I read that Phil Harris, captain of the Cornelia Marie fishing boat featured on Deadliest Catch, has died at the age of 53. Harris was hospitalized a few weeks ago after suffering a stroke while unloading crabs. He had been doing better until the sudden turn.

Deadliest Catch
airs on The Discovery Channel, the series documents the events aboard fishing boats in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab and Opilio crab fishing seasons.

Deadliest Catch is one of our favorite shows to watch as a family. We make it family TV night when it airs, all 3 of my boys really enjoy it. Captain Phil was one of our favorites on the show.

On the Discovery Channel site his sons, Jake and Josh who work on the ship as deck hands posted this message:

February 9, 2010: It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. - Jake and Josh Harris

Statement from Discovery (from their site) - Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil's every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil's sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew.

My family's thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends and crew.

Melinda and I love this show also and were sad when we saw this yesterday. It must be sad to lose your father at the age of 53. I hope the two boys step up and run the boat so Phil's legacy lives on.

I know all too well about the loss of a father. Deadliest Catch is a favorite show of the household and Captain Phil Harris was a guy we enjoyed watching and getting to know. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I also watch his show and I am always amused with his profession. Alaskan King Crab Fisherman is one of the most dangerous work in the world. Most deaths are associated with the harsh weather and machinery accidents.
