September - National Coupon Month

There isn’t a parent out there that isn’t looking for ways to save a few dollars here and there. Did you know, in celebration of the frugal family, September is National Coupon Month? That makes September a great time for families to refine their coupon saving skills by better organizing the coupons they receive, clip, or download to maximize their share of the $400 billion dollars of discounts available annually in the U.S.

Promotion Marketing Association (PMA) Coupon Council’s recent statistics on coupon usage and coupon clipping tips:

Some statistics include:
  • $3 billion of savings were achieved by consumers using packaged goods coupons last year.
  • The typical family can easily save $1,000 annually by spending just 20 minutes a week seeking, clipping and organizing their coupons.
  • 89 percent of the overall population report that they have prepared a shopping list using coupons, up from 78 percent who said they did so a year ago.

Some clipping tips include:
  • Look for coupons in the Sunday newspaper, coupon books, in magazines, in your mailbox, at the grocery store shelf, on the Internet and with your cash register receipts.
  • Visit manufacturers and retailers websites to download or register for coupons to be sent to you.
  • Use a coupon organizer to sort coupons and keep it with you at all times (for those "unplanned" shopping trips). Use coupons with shorter expiration dates first to stock up on necessary items.
  • Maximize savings by using retailer coupons during big event sales (i.e. Back-to-School, Holiday, and Seasonal).
