Seventh Generation - Review & Giveaway

"Seventh Generation is committed to becoming the world's most trusted brand of authentic, safe, and environmentally-responsible products for a healthy home. For 20 years, the closely held Burlington, Vermont-based company has been at the forefront of a cultural change in consumer behavior and business ethics."
"Every time you use a Seventh Generation product you are making a difference by saving natural resources, reducing pollution, keeping toxic chemicals out of the environment and making the world a safer place for this and the next seven generations."

I received a Seventh Generation baby starter kit which includes 2 packs of diapers/training pants , a tub and travel pack of baby wipes, baby laundry detergent and a reusable bag.

We just started potty-training, we are using the Seventh Generation’s Chlorine-Free Training Pants. They’re super soft (designed to offer cloth-like comfort), hypo-allergenic, fragrance and latex-free. So far NO leaks . Seventh Generation designed the training pants with inner leak barriers and stretchy, tear-away side panels to keep your child dry and comfortable. Diapers are available in sizes Newborn-Stage 6 and the Training Pants in sizes 2T-5T.

The Chlorine-Free Baby Wipes are unscented, hypo-allergenic, alcohol-free, and contain Aloe Vera and Vitamin E lotion. The baby wipes contain a cleansing agent that is gentle on baby’s tender skin. They are made with soft cloth that has not been processed with chemicals containing chlorine. They are super soft and clean really well. The tub of wipes makes it easy with its one-at-a-time dispensing !

The baby laundry detergent works great on my little ones clothes and I even tried it on ours and was not disappointed ! The bottles is 50oz. which will do 16 loads. It is Non-toxic & bio degradable, Hypo-allergenic, Free of phosphates & optical brighteners. It is also safe for septic & greywater systems which is a plus for us. On top of all of that it is also Kosher-certified and not tested on animals.
Seventh Generation has other great products which include: non-chlorine bleached, 100% recycled paper products, bathroom and facial tissues, and napkins; non-toxic, phosphate-free cleaning, dish and laundry products; plastic trash bags made from recycled plastic and chlorine-free feminine care products.
* Seventh Generation has generously donated a baby starter kit which includes 2 packs of diapers or training pants in the size of your choice, a tub and travel pack of baby wipes, baby laundry detergent and a reusable bag ! *
WIN A Baby Starter Kit !

CAN A CLEAN HOUSE CREATE JOBS?? http://www.seventhgeneration.com/learn/blog/wages-housecleaning-cooperativesat Seventh Generation, we try to infuse sustainability across our business. Whether it's through incentives we provide our employees to reduce their carbon footprints, our LEED certified office space, or work we do throughout our supply chain, we strive every day to consider the results of our every action on the next seven generations.
We have also committed ourselves to help create a world of enlightened equity and justice. You might ask, how does an environmentally friendly consumer products company do that? Well, frankly, we continually challenge ourselves with that question and the truth is it's not always easy to find a good answer. With the global economy spinning out of control and an unending stream of corporate layoffs, bailouts, and downsizing, we think it's more important than ever that we seek to answer that question.am pleased to tell you about an exciting new partnership between Seventh Generation and Women's Action to Gain Economic Security, or WAGES. WAGES is a non-profit organization based in San Francisco's Bay Area that for the last 14 years has been helping Latina women start and run their own cooperatively-owned green residential cleaning businesses. The coops serve clients in the Bay area with eco-friendly home cleaning services that help to protect the health of their clients' homes and families The coops also protect the health of the women who use these cleaning products 8 hours a day.

Which are "greener" -- crayons or markers?
--CapeCodGirl
The answer to your question depends on how you define “green,” and on the composition of the specific crayon or marker being considered. Most crayons are made from paraffin wax and pigment and have a paper label affixed with glue made of cornstarch and water.[1] Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct and paraffin wax crayons are not biodegradable. A more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional crayons are soy oil based crayons which are plant-derived and 100% biodegradable. [3-4] Markers are divided into 3 main categories: water-based, alcohol-based, and aromatic solvent-based. Water-based markers are the least toxic, followed by alcohol-based, although alcohol-based markers do contain toxins. Aromatic solvent-based markers are the most toxic and many contain xylene, a chemical that is a neuro-, kidney-, reproductive-, and respiratory toxin.[1] In addition to its health effects, xylene is highly toxic to aquatic life and bioaccumulates at a moderate level in fish. The best approach for marker selection is to avoid alcohol and aromatic solvent based markers (avoid “permanent” or “waterproof” on the label) and choose water-based non-toxic brands (look for “low-odor” on the label). Another consideration is the amount of material needed to deliver the desired effect. The only residual after a crayon is used is the paper in which it was wrapped and the box in which it was packaged. After a marker is depleted, it leaves behind a plastic case, absorbent interior, felt tip, plastic cap, and the box in which it was packaged. This suggests that a marker requires more materials to deliver its desired effect than does a crayon. References:

I've always assumed that harsh chemicals are removed from water when it leaves my home and travels to a treatment facility. If water is treated, why is it important to use natural and organic detergents? Thank you.
-A Phillips
Dear A. Phillips,
Some of the most detrimental environmental effects arising from detergent use are associated with the persistence of detergent ingredients in treated wastewater. There are many chemicals that are not completely removed through the typical wastewater treatment processes. Zeolite builders, plant nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, some antimicrobial agents, chlorinated hydrocarbons, non-biodegradable surfactants, and wastewater treatment byproducts, to name a few, are found in treated laundry wastewater which is then reintroduced into the environment and can be toxic to aquatic life, damage the environment, and adversely affect human health.
For this reason, it is important to use natural detergents that are non-toxic and biodegradable. In addition to persisting in treated wastewater, using responsibly sourced natural detergent products reduces the rate of depletion of natural resources. More Questions
